T-Mobile US inks new contracts with Nokia, Ericsson for 5G expansion

T-Mobile US has extended its partnership with Nokia with a new five-year deal to expand 5G nationwide. Under the latest contract, T-Mobile will harness Nokia’s AirScale Radio platform to deploy an Ultra Capacity 5G layer with 2.5GHz Massive MIMO technology, lifting speeds and lowering latency. Also, Nokia will continue to help with the upgrade of T-Mobile US’ mid-band LTE network to 5G and expand its extended range (low-band) 5G network.

T-Mobile US also cut a deal with Ericsson to continue advancing its 5G network. The five-year deployment contract will leverage Ericsson's Radio System portfolio, with the company supplying equipment, software and related services. Delivery will include active and passive antennas for coverage indoors and outside, completemented by Massive MIMO capacity over mid and high bands. The technology will help T-Mobile UD develop 5G use cases and improve 5G spectral efficiency. The operator's buildout also includes 5G Standalone (SA) architecture, voice over new radio (VoNR), New Radio (NR) carrier aggregation, network slicing and multi-user massive MIMO.

The company said both agreements, with Nokia and Ericsson, were multi-billion dollar deals. Similar deals were agreed with the two suppliers in 2018, each worth USD 3.5 billion.
