Telecom Italia has confirmed that it’s finalising plans to bring fibre-optic broadband technology to 250 Italian cities in a joint venture with broadband provider Metroweb. The chairman of state-backed lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), the main shareholder of Metroweb, last week said talks with Telecom Italia had picked up recently and the companies were discussing the possibility of expanding their joint rollout plans to more cities. Telecom Italia CEO Marco Patuano has now confirmed the ongoing talks, adding that "in January we will begin checks with authorities on the regulatory and antitrust issues that the project could have." However, the companies have yet to discuss prices or financial options, added Patuano, according to Reuters.
The government is said to be keen to use Metroweb as the vehicle for implementing its EUR 12 billion public-private project to roll out fibre-optic broadband across the country but the plan was held up by Telecom Italia’s insistence on eventually being allowed to take control of the company.
