Telecom Italia is prepared to reopen negotiations on broadband rollout with Milan-based fibre-optic provider Metroweb, according to chairman Giuseppe Recchi. “Telecom Italia has always been open to Metroweb… it has always been open to building a sustainable network for the benefit of the market and the country,” said Recchi on the sidelines of a conference, according to Ansa. He went on to confirm that the company will discuss strategic operations at its next board meeting on 16 October.
The chairman’s comments came after reports indicating that the two shareholders of Metroweb – state-backed Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and infrastructure fund FSI – sent a letter to Telecom Italia saying they are prepared to consent to the operator’s insistence on proceeding along the lines of the Dutch model implemented by FTTH network operator Reggefiber and the incumbent operator KPN.
Unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg suggested the Telecom Italia board may discuss a cash offer for an initial stake of 40 percent in Metroweb, subsequently boosting its holding to 60 percent and eventually reaching 100 percent over a five-year period.
