Telefonica has announced plans to expand its fibre optic network to 97 percent of all of Spain’s households and bring 4G services to 100 percent of users by 2020. The company’s plans were revealed by Telefonica Espana CEO Luis Gilperez Miguel at the XXIX telecommunications and digital economy meeting held at Menendez Pelayo university in Santander. Although Gilperez confirmed that Telefonica was prepared to “bring the digital divide to an end” by adding all Spanish towns with over 1,000 inhabitants to its fibre network, he said the commitment was dependent on “the regulatory model maintaining its support for competition in infrastructure and continuing to prioritise investment and innovation.” The company has previously said it would only continue with its expansion plans if the telecoms regulator agreed to tone down plans to open up its fibre network to rival operators.
Telefonica also announced that it will soon be launching a symmetric 300 Mbps download and upload Movistar Fusion service in response to Orange Spain’s launch of a Canguro 300/300 plan. In June the operator tripled the maximum available download speed from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps and will now increase the upload speed from 30 Mbps to 300 Mbps “in the coming months”.
