Telefonica to cut fibre rollout by 35% in response to CNMC
Telefonica has taken the decision to reduce its fibre deployment in Spain by 35 percent this year in response to the changes to the fixed broadband market proposed by Spain's communications regulator CNMC, reports Expansion. The new rules would require Telefonica to open up its fibre optic network in all of Spain apart from nine cities with a view to ensuring competition and promoting investment in next generation access (NGA) networks. Telefonica had already warned that the CNMC's proposal could have the opposite of the intended effect and prompt operators to alter the major investment plans they have already announced. According to the report, Telefonica will cut its fibre rollout from the 5.5 million households it intended to connect in 2015 to 3.5 million.
