Telefonica has announced that it plans to invest some EUR 70 million a year in the production of a total of 14 original Spanish TV series over the next two years. Luis Miguel Gilperez, president of Telefonica Spain, made the announcement at the presentation of the EUR 10 million production “La Peste”, a series set in a plague-ravaged 16th century Seville. “La Peste” will be directed by Alberto Rodriguez, responsible for the critically acclaimed thriller "La Isla Minima" (“Marshland”), and will premiere in December 2017 on Movistar+. The six episodes of the series will be shot during 18 weeks starting on 06 February, in over 130 locations in Andalucia and Extremadura.

Telefonica has already emulated Netflix's successful model in the production sphere by creating Telefonica Studios, the company's audiovisual content production unit and last year signed an exclusive licensing deal to broadcast CBS’s Showtime series in Spain. "We aspire to become the biggest producers in Spanish globally," said Gilperez, adding that "offering the best TV content included in ‘Fusion’ allows us to integrate in our convergent offer a unique element and provides added value to our network." The operator will launch four original TV series this year, including "La Peste", and ten more in 2018, said Gilperez.
