Telefonica is set to announce the appointment of Emilio Gayo as the new CEO of its Spanish unit (Telefonica Espana), according to unnamed company sources cited by local daily El Espanol. Gayo, currently in charge of the marketing and enterprise segment in Spain, will replace company veteran Luis Miguel Gilperez, who has been in charge of Telefonica’s domestic unit since 2011 and played a leading role in the introduction of Movistar Fusion back in 2013. The convergent offer revolutionised the market and had grown to 4.38 million subscribers by the end of Q3 2017.
Gayo was recruited by Gilperez himself from Europraxis, an Indra-linked consultancy that assessed Telefonica. The report adds that he has already began working to revamp the operator’s domestic team and one of his first recruits is expected to be Pedro Serrahima, former CEO of MVNO Pepephone, who could be tasked with competing with fast-rising operator Masmovil in the low-price segment.
