Telegram faces ban in Russia after losing court appeal over encryption keys

The Russian Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from the messaging app Telegram against the Federal Security Service's request for the company to disclose encryption keys to access messages from Telegram users, reports Tdaily.ru. Russian federal telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor ordered Telegram to fulfill the requirement within 15 days.

The watchdog plans to block the messenger if the company refuses to disclose the keys.

Telegram has resisted the blanket access to its platform, saying access to private correspondence should be possible only with a court warrant.

Telegram files new appeal against Russian ban

Messenger app Telegram has submitted an appeal against the decision of the Russian Supreme Court to the Chamber of the Supreme Court, reports Comnews.ru. The company want the March decision by the Supreme Court overturned. In that decision, the court rejected an appeal from Telegram against the decision by the federal security service FSB requiring the messenger to present encryption keys enabling access to information on its users' communications.

The Iranian government has banned state bodies from using the Telegram instant messaging app as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's office said his account would shut down to protect national security, ISNA reported. The order came days after Russia, Iran's ally in the Syrian war, started blocking Telegram in its territory after the company's repeated refusal to give Russian state security services access to users' secret messages.

Russian regulator files lawsuit to block Telegram messenger

Russian federal telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor said on 06 April it had filed a lawsuit to limit access to the Telegram messaging application after the company refused to give Russian state security services access to its users' secret messages. Ranked as the world's ninth most popular mobile messaging application, Telegram is widely used in countries across the former Soviet Union and Middle East. The number of active users reached 200 million in March.

Viber says it cannot present encryption keys to Russian govt

The messenger Viber cannot present its encryption keys to provide user data access to Russian governmental institutions, reports Vedomosti citing Michael Shmilov, the CEO of Viber Media. It simply does not have these keys, he said. All the main functions of the messenger are protected using end-to-end encryption, so only the users are able to present the encryption keys.

Telegram reaches 200 mln active monthly users

Messaging app Telegram announced that its audience exceeded 200 million people in the past 30 days. The milestone was announced in a blog posting by founder Pavel Durov, who thanked users for the support. He noted that the company never used advertising, so the growth in user numbers came entirely from users inviting others to join the platform.

Telegram appeals to European Court of Human Rights

Russian messenger Telegram has appealed to the European Human Rights Court (EHRC) on the RUB 800,000 fine imposed on the company by a Russian court, reports Vedomosti. The messenger was fined for its refusal to disclose its encryption keys to the Federal Security Service (FSB). The keys would enable the FSB to access the messages of Telegram users. Telegram considers such a requirements a violation of the Convention on Human Rights and has asked the European court to consider its case.

A Moscow first-tier court has imposed a RUB 800,000 fine on Russian messenger Telegram, reports Tdaily.ru. The fine follows the messenger refusing to provide Russian regulators with data enabling them to decode messages sent by its users.
