Telenor has announced a 5G pilot at its headquarters in Fornebu in Oslo using two new base stations on the premises. Telenor Norway CEO Petter-Borre Furberg said this will enable experts at HQ to get immediate access to the network of the future so that they can learn as much as possible about the impact 5G will have on Norwegian society.
Telenor already runs or is preparing 5G research projects in Kongsberg, Elverum, Trondheim and other locations. One of the new Fornebu base stations operates on 3.6 GHz and is part of Telenor's 5G expansion in Norway. The other runs on 26 GHz and is part of a research project in partnership with the EU called 5G-VINNI.
The 5G pilot at Fornebu uses different telecom manufacturers for different purposes. During the course of the year, Telenor will decide who will supply the equipment for its 5G network roll-out in Norway, Furberg said.
Besides Telenor, the consultancy Evry is among companies who will participate in the testing at Fornebu.
