Tigo Business opens CentAm cloud centre with Microsoft

The Tigo Business unit of Millicom has inaugurated a Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) in Guatemala, its first in the Central American region, in collaboration with Microsoft. The CCoE is designed to accelerate cloud adoption across hybrid or cloud-native systems, as well as innovation and migration efforts, while increasing business agility.

In a statement Tigo said the Tigo Business team of engineers at the centre will be able to offer professional services, managed services and all the support that Central American companies need for Microsoft Azure cloud solutions from Guatemala. The collaboration with Microsoft covers cloud (Microsoft Azure), Unified Communications as a Service (Microsoft Teams Phone System) and cybersecurity (Microsoft 365 Security).

The operator added that the CCoE will strengthen processes and capacities for the implementation of solutions in areas such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), migrations to Microsoft Azure, account migrations (companies that already use Microsoft Azure to the Tigo Business control panel), disaster recovery and special cases.

Bruha named Millicom CFO

Millicom, owner of Tigo-branded operations across Latin America and Africa, has announced the appointment of Sheldon Bruha as its Chief Financial Officer. Bruha, who was most recently the CFO at US operator Frontier Communications, will join the company on 17 January and will take over as CFO on 01 April when Tim Pennington retires from the role after 8 years. Pennington will continue to serve as an advisor to the CEO through the end of 2022 to ensure a smooth transition, said Millicom.

Millicom ends USD 50 mln share repurchase

Millicom, owner of Tigo-branded operations across Latin America and Africa, said it had ended the share repurchase programme first announced at the end of July. In a short statement, Millicom said it repurchased 1,369,284 shares, for a total amount of SEK 434,999,907.08 (around USD 50 million).

Millicom, owner of Tigo-branded operations across Latin America and Africa, has signed an agreement to acquire the remaining 45 percent equity interest in Tigo Guatemala from its local partner (Miffin Associates Corp) for a total of USD 2.2 billion in cash. The transaction means Millicom will own 100 percent of Tigo Guatemala, increasing the parent company's equity free cash flow by around USD 200 million before incremental financing costs.

Tigo El Salvador to invest USD 100 mln in rural connectivity drive

Tigo El Salvador (Millicom) has announced plans to invest around USD 100 million to connect more than 350,000 inhabitants of rural parts of 67 localities by the end of this year, reports business news site El Economista, citing the company's CEO Edgard Grande. "We have made 30 percent progress in the coverage project and 60 percent in the capacity hike," said Grande in reference to the plan USD 500 million investment plan launched in 2019 to connect 3 million Salvadorans at twice their existing speed.

Millicom rebrands Cable Onda as Tigo Panama

Millicom has announced the rebranding of its Cable Onda brand as Tigo just over two years after it completed the acquisition of the Panamanian cable provider for around USD 1 billion. Tigo (Millicom) is planning to significantly expand its value-added plans for businesses in Costa Rica to include managed services as well as cloud, big data and IoT-based proposals, reports El Financiero, citing the operator's business director Ramon Gene.
