Tigo, Personal, Claro bid for Paraguay 700 MHz spectrum

Paraguay's telecommunications regulator Conatel has announced the country’s three leading mobile operators have all submitted bids for spectrum in the long-awaited 700 MHz tender launched last month. The watchdog will assess the technical conditions of the bids from Claro (America Movil), Tigo (Millicom) and Personal before announcing the results of the auction by the end of the year.

A total of seven licences of 5 x 5 MHz each have been made available at a minimum amount of USD 12 million per block. In total, the regulator is looking to raise at least USD 84 million for the five-year licences. The 700 MHz band will used above all in the deployment of 4G technology, with the successful bidders required to install services in underserved rural areas.

Paraguay raises USD 85 mln in 700 MHz spectrum auction

Paraguayan regulator Conatel announced that its first tender for spectrum in the 700 MHz band raised a total of USD 84.5 million, slightly above the base price. Tigo (Millicom) acquired three of the seven available blocks of 2x5 MHz spectrum for USD 36 million, while Claro (America Movil) acquired two blocks for USD 24 million and Nucleo (Personal) added another two blocks for the same figure. All operators have pledged to use the spectrum to continue expanding their 4G networks in Paraguay.

LatAm countries lagging behind in 700MHz spectrum availability

Latin American countries are still lagging seriously behind International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendations on the allocation of spectrum in the 700MHz and 2.5GHz bands, according to a report published by industry association 5G Americas. Describing the current situation as "far from ideal", the industry body said the vast majority of countries have yet to free up spectrum in the 700MHz band, which helps boost mobile broadband adoption rates, above all in rural and underserved areas.

Paraguay's LTE penetration rate reached a total of 13.3 percent at the end of 2016, well over double the 5.6 percent recorded a year earlier, according to a report by industry association 5G Americas. Tigo Paraguay to expand 4G service to 127 districts

Tigo Paraguay (Millicom) intends to expand its 4G-LTE network to a further 96 of the country's districts this year, reports local daily La Nacion, citing the company's director of institutional relations Raul Ibanez. Paraguay has added new conditions to licences for the 800 MHz band.
