TikTok takes new CEO from ByteDance, in dual role

TikTok has announced that Shouzi Chew, the CFO at ByteDance, will also become its new CEO, in a dual role. Vanessa Pappas, who has served as interim head at TikTok, will formally take on the role of TikTok COO.

Pappas took on the interim role in August following the abrupt resignation of Kevin Mayer, an former executive at Walt Disney. Pappas joined TikTok in 2018. She will maintain her current responsibilities including managing TikTok’s key operations.

Chew joined ByteDance last month after service at Xiaomi since 2015. He will be based in his hometown of Singapore while Pappas will work out of the company’s Los Angeles office.

ByteDance CFO Shou Zi Chew is stepping down in order to focus more on his role as CEO of unit TikTok, CNBC reported, citing an internal memo. Chew was appointed head of TikTok in May, succeeding interim chief Vanessa Pappas who took over following the resignation of Kevin Mayer, a former executive at Walt Disney, in August 2020 amid political turmoil with the US.

TikTok announced that it's passed the milestone of 1 billion monthly active users around the world. The achievement puts it in a small group of apps with such an audience, including Telegram and WhatsApp. TikTok attributed the growth to the "creativity and authenticity of our creators", who are able to reach "millions of people, across generations".

TikTok to introduce option for longer videos

Chinese video-sharing app TikTok, famous for its videos from 15 to 60 seconds long, said it plans to soon introduce an option for longer videos. The company said the option, for up to three minutes of video in length, will give more time for creators to make new or expanded types of content on the video service. The option will be rolled out over the coming weeks.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has ordered a ban on the TikTok app. The regulator said it issued directions to the service providers to immediately block access to the app.

TikTok parent ByteDance agrees to pay USD 92 mln to settle US class-action suit

ByteDance, the parent of TikTok, has agreed to pay USD 92 million to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging it illegally collected the user data of some of its US users, Reuters reported, citing court filings at the US District Court in Illinois. The agreement was reached after over a year of litigation and represented users as young as 8 years old.

TikTok removes over 89 mln videos in H2

TikTok's Transparency Report for H2 2020 shows that it removed 89.130 million videos globally in the period for violating its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service, which is less than 1 percent of all videos uploaded on TikTok. Of these videos, 11.78 million were removed in the US alone. Some 6.14 million accounts were removed for violating its Community Guidelines.
