TIM, Google sign MoU to build cloud centres for Intesa Sanpaolo
Telecom Italia (TIM) and Google have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Italian financial services provider Intesa Sanpaolo to build two cloud centres in Turin and Milan with a view to accelerating the bank’s digitalisation and promoting innovative services to Italian families and businesses.

In a joint statement, the partners revealed that the Google cloud region in Turin will be devoted to artificial intelligence, training and professional support for startups through initiatives to be defined by all three entities. The second cloud region in Milan will be used to support business continuity, with both centres built according to the latest environmental best practices, including carbon neutrality, in compliance with the bank’s sustainability guidelines.

Intesa Sanpaolo added that, once all terms and conditions have been agreed between the parties and after receiving regulatory clearance, the ambitious project will allow it to deploy the latest technologies in line with the highest international security and data protection standards.

TIM said the MoU lays the foundation for a long-term partnership to create cutting-edge cloud infrastructure to support Italy's digitalisation process. Last year, the operator and Google confirmed they’d be working together on new cloud and edge computing services for Italian companies and the public administration, including the opening of new Google cloud regions in the country, with TIM aiming to generate EUR 1 billion in revenues from cloud technologies by 2024.

The partners last month teamed up with Intesa Sanpaolo to launch a product called "G Suite TIM Edition” for Italian SMEs that combines TIM's fibre, FWA and 4G networks with Google G Suite productivity and collaboration apps.
