UK could block Arm, Nvidia deal on national security grounds - report

The UK government is considering blocking the takeover of chip designer ARM by US chip company Nvidia on national security grounds, reports Bloomberg citing unnamed sources familiar with the talks.

The USD 40 billion deal was announced in autumn 2020. The Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) has been examining whether the deal could be anti-competitive or a threat to national security. According to sources, the CMA's report, delivered to the UK government in late-July, expressed serious concerns about national security, leaving the government inclined to block the deal. Another source said that these concerns could see the government launch a deeper examination of the deal. However, the sources added that a final decision had not been made and that the deal could still be approved with conditions.
