UK govt announces six areas for full fibre network pilots

The UK Government has confirmed six areas to pilot the UK's fastest broadband as part of a multi-million million project. Next-generation networks will deliver connection speeds of 1 Gbps, with six test projects in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, West Sussex, Coventry and Warwickshire, Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset, West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.

The projects will get around GBP 10 million to test ways of connecting offices and public sector buildings with full-fibre networks running connections straight to the doors of premises. This is the first phase of a GBP 200 million programme announced by the government in May, a 4-year programme to promote the growth of full fibre across the UK. The remaining GBP 190 million will be invested by 2020/2021.

UK Digital Minister Matt Hancock has stressed the government's commitment to full fibre technology. Speaking at the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG) 2017 Conference, he said although a copper network was important today, a copper-to-the-premises solution was not 'fit for the future'.

UK govt confirms GBP 645 million superfast broadband boost

The UK government announced that up to GBP 645 million will be made available to boost broadband coverage to the most rural and hard to reach places across the UK. This will help extend ast broadband to up to 900,000 extra UK homes and businesses. Minister for Digital Nick Hancock said that 'superfast' broadband, considered at least 24 Mbps, reaches almost 94 percent of the UK and was on track to reach 95 percent by end-2017. The new fund will include up to GBP 56 million to boost coverage in Wales.

Study calls for action to connect 'final few' in UK rural areas

The UK Government should prioritise the delivery of superfast broadband to the 'final few' in rural communities or risk leaving them behind, according to a new study from researchers at Aberdeen University. The study says that the move to 'digital by default', with many public services going online only, risks excluding homes and businesses without adequate connections from accessing these services in the future.

UK govt consults on proposed tax break for fibre investments

The UK Government has published a consultation on draft regulations for implementing business rates relief for new full-fibre infrastructure. The powers will be enabled through the Telecommunications Infrastructure (Relief from Non-Domestic Rates) Bill. The relief will be delivered to telecoms network operators installing new fibre on their networks. This new fibre will be eligible for 100 percent relief from business rates for the five years from 01 April 2017 to 31 March 2022.

The UK market appears to be experiencing a realisation that the 'superfast fibre' rolled out by BT in recent years might not be the ultimate in broadband experience. TalkTalk CEO questions legality of rural broadband plans

TalkTalk CEO Tristia Harrison has said that plans to allow BT to recover rural broadband upgrade costs through higher wholesale access charges are 'legally questionable'. Speaking to The Telegraph, Harrison said that it fully supported government plans to provide decent broadband to all UK homes as quickly as possible, but warned that the current offer was legally questionable and would be more expensive and difficult to implement than expected.

UK govt plans Gigabit voucher scheme for small firms - report

The UK Government plans to start trials of a Gigabit broadband voucher scheme for small businesses from autumn 2017, reports The Register. The scheme will see small businesses apply for vouchers worth up to GBP 3,000 to put towards the cost of installing Gigabit broadband, according to documents seen by The Register.

Openreach pulses market interest in full FTTP roll-out

UK wholesale operator Openreach has launched a consultation on demand for rolling out a 'full-fibre' network. Amid growing support from government and private investors in Britain for FTTP, the network operator wants to assess interest from the over 580 communication service providers already using its copper network. Openreach said greater industry collaboration would be needed to make investment in a FTTP network viable, including developing new investment, risk and cost-sharing models.

Openreach close to deal to upgrade rural broadband

UK operator Openreach is close to a deal with the government to deliver broadband upgrades to more than a million rural homes as part of the universal service obligation. Openreach CEO Clive Selley discussed the talks in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, noting the outcome of the discussions hinges on charge controls.
