University of Surrey plans 5G mobile technology R&D centre
The University of Surrey has secured GBP 35 million to establish a new research centre for 5G mobile technology. It has secured a GBP 11.6 million funding grant from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF), plus around GBP 24 million from a consortium of key mobile operators and infrastructure providers including - Huawei, Samsung, Telefonica Europe, Fujitsu Laboratories Europe, Rohde-Schwarz and AIRCOM International. The funds will be used to develop a specialised 5G Innovation Centre to stimulate significant expansion in UK telecommunication research, development, innovation and the provision of broadband mobile internet services.

Ofcom makes preparations for 5G spectrum auction - report

UK communications regulator Ofcom is making preparations for the launch of next-generation 5G mobile services, reports the Daily Telegraph. Downing Street expresses support for Huawei

Downing Street has expressed its support for Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei Technologies, reports the Financial Times. A spokesperson for Prime Minister David Cameron said that it welcomed the creation of 500 jobs from Huawei's recently-announced GBP 1.3 billion investment in the UK.

UK MPs examine BT, Huawei relationship

The UK Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee is investigating the long-term commercial relationship between BT and Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei, chairman Sir Michael Rifkind has confirmed to The Guardian newspaper. Huawei to move UK headquarters to Reading

Huawei Technologies plans to move its UK headquarters from Basingstoke to Green Park in Reading, PC Advisor reports. Victor Zhang, Huawei Technologies CEO, said the move marked the start of an exciting new period of development for the company in the UK. The new 140,000 sq ft headquarters can accommodate up to 1,000 workers. The company currently has 800 workers in the UK and plans to boost this to 1,500 in the coming years.
