
University of Surrey plans 5G mobile technology R&D centre

The University of Surrey has secured GBP 35 million to establish a new research centre for 5G mobile technology. It has secured a GBP 11.6 million funding grant from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF), plus around GBP 24 million from a consortium of key mobile operators and infrastructure providers including - Huawei, Samsung, Telefonica Europe, Fujitsu Laboratories Europe, Rohde-Schwarz and AIRCOM International. The funds will be used to develop a specialised 5G Innovation Centre to stimulate significant expansion in UK telecommunication research, development, innovation and the provision of broadband mobile internet services.
