Veon appoints Facebook exec as COO of Veon Ventures

Veon Group has appointed Sergi Herrero as the COO of the new Veon Ventures division effective from September. Herrero will be a member of the Veon’s Group executive committee and report to the chairman and CEO, Ursula Burns. Veon Ventures is a new division set up to grow the telecom operator's potential market in adjacent sectors of digital services. 

Herrero is currently Facebook’s global director of payments and commerce partnerships, where he has overseen the launch and growth of payment and commerce capabilities for Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. He has also led the deployment of Charitable Giving, the scaling and optimization of the Facebook Ads payments business and driven the expansion of the platform’s global marketplace. Before joining Facebook in 2014, he held several senior roles in technology, banking and consulting.

Veon has updated its strategy and targets at an investors day with analysts. The company increased its EBITDA growth target for this year and said it aims to grow in future from more new services and assets, beyond its core connectivity business. In addition, the group set a new policy to pay out at least 50 percent of cash flow as dividends.

Veon raises dividend as H1 results track ahead of FY growth outlook

Veon reported second-quarter results ahead of its full-year outlook. Organic revenues rose 7.5 percent, and adjusted EBITDA was up 11.1 percent, compared to a forecast for low single-digit growth in revenue and low to mid single-digit growth in EBITDA. The growth was supported mainly by the operations in Pakistan and Ukraine, offsetting flat results in Russia and declines in Algeria and Uzbekistan.

Veon Q1 profit boosted by Ericsson settlement, organic revenue up 7.4%

Veon reported strong underlying results in the first quarter, ahead of its full-year outlook, with organic revenues up 7.4 percent and adjusted EBITDA up 37 percent. The company said it saw a strong performance in its largest markets Pakistan, Ukraine, Bangladesh and Russia, and also benefited from cost-cutting efforts and the USD 350 million settlement with Ericsson.

The Veon Group has appointed Alex Kazbegi chief strategy officer, effective 18 February. Kazbegi will report to the chairman and CEO, Ursula Burns.

Veon shareholders elect 3 new board members

Veon announced the results of the elections conducted at its annual general meeting of shareholders held earlier on 30 July. Shareholders elected three new members of the company's board of directors, Guillaume Bacuvier, Osama Bedier and Robert Jan van de Kraats, as well as eight previously serving directors, Ursula Burns, Mikhail M. Fridman, Gennady Gazin, Gunnar Holt, Andrei Gusev, Sir Julian Horn-Smith, Guy Laurence and Alexander Pertsovsky.
