Verizon Wireless to start 5G field trials next year
US carrier Verizon Wireless has announced plans to start 5G mobile technology field trials in 2016 in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung. The companies have formed working teams to accelerate innovation. Verizon is creating 5G network environments or 'sandboxes' at its innovation centres in Boston and San Francisco.

The expected benefits of 5G announced at the first Verizon 5G Technology Forum in August include 50 times faster speeds than current LTE, single millisecond latency, and the capacity to handle more IoT devices. The Technology Forum also includes of venture capital groups focused on emerging technologies. 

Rima Qureshi, chief strategy officer for Ericsson, welcomed the Verizon-led initiative, saying "A lot of development and requirements for 5G networks have so far come from Asian operators. It's exciting to see a US company accelerate the rate of innovation and introduce new partners."

Verizon completes 5G radio specification

Nokia, Verizon trial fixed 5G in residential environment

Nokia has collaborated with Verizon on a 5G field trial in January on Verizon's Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex network that was the first conducted completely out of doors and in a residential environment. AT&T asks FCC for spectrum to test 5G

AT&T has filed an application to the FCC for a three-year licence to test 5G technology in its home market Austin, Texas, Light Reading reports. Wireless consulting engineer Steve Crowley spotted the filings and posted them on Twitter. AT&T asked for clearance to use the 3.5GHz, 4GHz, 15GHz and 28GHz bands to test potential 5G technologies.
