Vodafone Germany to invest in fibre-optic infrastructure in partnership with municipalities

Friday 6 October 2017 | 17:15 CET | News

Vodafone Germany has launched GigaOffensive, a fibre-optics infrastructure investments programme, within which the operator plans to invest EUR 2 billion into 13.7 million new broadband accesses. In the first stage, Vodafone will provide fibre-optics broadband to 12.6 million households by upgrading its cable network. In the future, the operator plans to lay fibre-optics infrastructure for around 1 million households in rural areas.

In the model GigaGemeinde, the operator will support cities and municipalities by constructing fibre-optics networks. The operator will rent local infrastructure and equip it as a high-performance broadband network. In the tailored agreements between the operator and individual municipalities, the scope of ownership and responsibility are clearly defined. The municipalities will contribute with the construction part and the operator with the technological part.
