Vodafone Portugal becomes Sport TV shareholder

Vodafone Portugal has signed an agreement with operator Nos and sports rights owner Olivedesportos to become a shareholder in premium sports channel Sport TV Portugal. As a result of the agreement, Sport TV will get a new shareholding structure, in which Vodafone, Nos and Olivedesportos will each have an equal share.

No financial details of the agreement were disclosed. Vodafone said the deal is part of its strategy to become a full-service telecom operator in Portugal. In May it signed an agreement with Nos to share national and international sport content rights, giving it notably access to the Benfica matches controlled by Nos.

Sport TV offers several premium channels in Portugal and Africa and is also planning to launch a free-to-air channel. The company is 50/50 owned by Nos and Olivedesportos. Sport TV ended 2015 with EUR 10.3 million in losses, which is 66 percent more than in 2014, when they amounted to EUR 6.2 million, according to the financial results of Nos. In the same period, revenues grew 7.4 percent to EUR 119.7 million.
