WhatsApp exceeds 1.4 bln voice and video calls made on New Year's Eve 2020 globally

Facebook said over 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made on New Year’s Eve 2020 globally, the most ever calls in a single day, on WhatsApp. WhatsApp calling increased by over 50 percent compared with 31 December 2019. People celebrated with effects in Messenger, and the top AR effect in the US was "2020 Fireworks".

New Year's Eve 2020 was the biggest day ever for Messenger group video calls (3+ people) in the US, with nearly twice more group video calls on NYE compared with the average day. There were more than 55 million live broadcasts across Facebook and Instagram globally on New Year's Eve.

Turkey suspends new WhatsApp policy on data sharing

Turkey's Competition Authority opened an investigation into Facebook and WhatsApp and suspended their new data sharing rules, according to Anadolu news agency. The app could not be used by customers who refused to accept the new terms, the authority said in a statement.

WhatsApp updates terms to require data sharing with Facebook

WhatsApp is updating its terms and conditions for both iOS and Android users, including how it processes user data and when it shares this with other Facebook companies. WhatsApp users were informed about the change through an in-app notice telling them about the app's updated mandatory terms of service and privacy policy. They need to accept the changes by 8 February if they want to continue using the app.

The US Federal Trade Commission along with 48 states and territories of the US have filed lawsuits against Facebook, accusing the company of illegally maintaining a monopoly in the social networking market. The case centres on the company's takeovers of Instagram and WhatsApp and may lead to Facebook being forced to divest some of its business. Facebook said the regulators were engaging in "revisionist history" by trying to undo acquisitions they had already approved.

Telkom South Africa has launched Telkom Pay, a digital wallet service that runs through WhatsApp. Customers of any mobile networks can use Telkom Pay and do not have to be subscribed to Telkom.
