WhatsApp launches status update feature
Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced the imminent launch of a new feature allowing users to share their status with friends via photos, videos and animated GIFs, which then disappear after 24 hours. Users can then overlay the image or video with text, finger sketches or emojis in a similar way to rival Snapchat's popular "Stories" feature. The launch comes after Facebook's Instagram last year rolled out a similar tool called Stories, which is also currently being tested for the main Facebook mobile app. WhatsApp said the new Status feature will be made available on 24 February, coinciding with the app's 8th birthday.

Snap inks USD 3 bln cloud, storage deals with Amazon, Google

Snap said it will pay Amazon at least USD 1 billion for internet, cloud and infrastructure services over the next five years, adding to a USD 2 billion agreement it has also signed with Google, Bloomberg reported, citing an update to Snap's IPO documents. Snap will pay Amazon USD 50 million in 2017 and then spend progressively more through 2021. In the filing, Snap says it may still build its own infrastructure.

Facebook growth is peaking, time to take the next step with AR/VR and AI

Facebook managed to maintain its revenue growth at over 50 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016. In 2017 growth is expected to slow and margins will drop. The company will increase its investments in AR/VR and AI, which will put further pressure on margins and free cash flow. Snapchat files for IPO to raise USD 3 billion

Snap, the company behind the messaging app Snapchat, has filed for an initial public offering of shares on the New York Stock Exchange. The SEC filing puts the expected proceeds at USD 3 billion, although details on the number and price of shares has not been set yet. Facebook grows Q4 sales 51% on mobile expansion

Facebook reported another quarter of over 50 percent revenue growth in Q4, while also more than doubling net profit. The social network's revenue rose 51 percent year-on-year to USD 8.81 billion. With operating costs rising a slower 21 percent, the margin improved to 52 percent from 44 percent a year ago. Net profit jumped to USD 3.57 billion or USD 1.21 per share from USD 1.56 billion or USD 0.54 per share in Q4 2015.

Whatsapp used by 95% of German teens

Whatsapp is by far the most popular communications app among German teenagers, with around 95 percent using it regularly, a new study has found.
