WhatsApp launches status update feature

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced the imminent launch of a new feature allowing users to share their status with friends via photos, videos and animated GIFs, which then disappear after 24 hours. Users can then overlay the image or video with text, finger sketches or emojis in a similar way to rival Snapchat's popular "Stories" feature. The launch comes after Facebook's Instagram last year rolled out a similar tool called Stories, which is also currently being tested for the main Facebook mobile app. WhatsApp said the new Status feature will be made available on 24 February,
