Xiaomi announced at its “Images of the Future” conference in Beijing that it’s working with Samsung to develop a 108-megapixel camera sensor for inclusion in future phones. In a statement, Xiaomi said the 108MP “ultra-clear” image sensor, the world’s highest-resolution smartphone camera sensor, will be capable of producing photos with a resolution of 12,032 x 9,024 pixels, maintaining a picture quality of 27MP in 2x zoom, which more than doubles the pixels of a standard 12MP telephoto camera. No additional information was provided other than the claim that the sensor is “coming soon”.

Xiaomi also revealed that it will be using Samsung’s Isocell GW1 64MP image sensor in an upcoming phone in its Redmi range. It said the GW1 uses pixel-merging Tetracell technology to deliver bright 16MP images under low-light conditions and a “remosaic” algorithm to produce ultra-clear 64MP shots in bright conditions. The 1/1.7-inch image sensor is currently the largest smartphone image sensor available, some 34 percent larger than the standard 48MP smartphone cameras seen on flagship devices.
