Zoom Video Communications announced it will offer free encryption to all its customers, not just paid subscribers. The decision is part of its 90-day review to improve security on the videoconferencing platform.
Zoom previously said encryption would be limited to paid customers. It's now decided to offer end-to-end encryption for all users – free and paid – as an advanced feature at no additional charge. Free users will need to participate in a one-time process to verify their account, such as verifying a phone number via text message. Encryption will be optional for both free and paid users.
Customers can provide input on the encryption plans, which are based on AES 256 GCM standard, on Github. Zoom aims to release an initial beta of the update with encryption in July.
Zoom also announced that its CISO council, which counts 36 advisors from a variety of industries, has met three times since its inception in late April. Starting in July, the CISO council will host CISO Roundtables to give existing and prospective customers the opportunity to meet with a few members from Zoom’s CISO council and security team and discuss the security measures Zoom has taken and its 90-day plan.
