ZTE, NetCologne launch G.fast pilot project

ZTE and German network operator NetCologne have launched a pilot phase for G.Fast technology. The system enables transmission speeds of 1 Gbps. In the test phase, the technology will be made available to 260,000 households in the NetCologne network over the coming year.

To implement G.fast, a new type of digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) is installed in building basements as an interconnection point. The new DSLAM uses a larger frequency spectrum than existing FTTB DSLAMs, increasing the transfer rate by a factor of ten.

In the pilot phase, speed profiles are being tested with different customer terminals. The live tests will use the frequency band up to 106 MHz. Once development on the new technology is finished, the frequency spectrum will be doubled to 212 MHz, ZTE announced.
