12% of Dutch have PayPal on their smartphone - Telecompaper

The number of smartphone apps used to pay online or via mobile is steadily growing in the Netherlands. That said, use is still limited, according to research by Telecompaper, based on the Consumer Panel. Only the PayPal app has garnered some traction: 12 percent of the Dutch say they have the app for this payment service on their smartphone.

On the Dutch market, PayPal is in competition with smaller services with a minimal range. These include TWYP, Bunq, Wiebetaaltwat, TabApp, Splitwise, Daalder and Vodafone Wallet/Vodafone Smart Pass. Most of these are mobile paymetn apps used for contactless payments. About 5 percent said they have the ability to make payments via mobile, according to the Telecompaper Consumer Panel from March.

PayPal is followed at a good distance by Wallet Vodafone, the Vodafone Smart Pass and Bunq. In all cases, men have the payment apps more often on their mobile device than women. In April, KPN and Rabobank together launched a mobile payment service following a successful trial. After ING, Rabobank is the second largest consumer bank that launched NFC payment via smartphone for a large group of customers.
