Alphabet starts cybersecurity company Chronicle

Alphabet announced a new business dedicated to cybersecurity called Chronicle. Part of its stable of companies alongside Google, Chronicle has been incubated for the past two years at 'X', the company's 'moonshot factory'. It will be "dedicated to helping companies find and stop cyber attacks before they cause harm", Alphabet said.

Chronicle will have two parts: a new cybersecurity intelligence and analytics platform to help enterprises better manage and understand their own security-related data; and VirusTotal, a malware intelligence service acquired by Google in 2012 which will continue to operate as it has for the last few years.

The company expects its products will help organisations detect cyberthreats much faster and make it cheaper and easier to capture and analyze the necessary security signals. Part of its advantage is access to the powerful, highly-scalable infrastructure at Alphabet, which provides enormous processing power and storage.

Stephen Gillett is CEO of the new company, after first joining Google in 2015 as an executive-in-residence at Google Ventures. Prior to that he was COO at Symantec.
