
Apple recently paid approximately USD 20 million to acquire US start-up WifiSlam, which specialises in indoor mobile location technology, a person familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. An Apple spokesperson confirmed the deal, saying the company buys smaller technology companies from time to time, usually without discussing its plans.
WifiSLAM, which has not commented on the news, was co-founded by a former software engineering intern at Google, Joseph Huang, and has Google employee Don Dodge is one of its investors. Apple has been working to improve and add functions to the mapping service it introduced with iOS 6 last year.
