Apple expands bug bounty programme to all devices

Apple is expanding its 'buy bounty' programme to macOS, tvOS, watchOS and iCloud. The programme which already covers iOS offers developers monetary rewards for discovering bugs in Apple's code and reporting them to the company for fixing. Apple announced the expanded offer at the Black Hat conference.

The company also revealed that it will provide security researchers with special iPhones to help them discover bugs before hackers do, Wired reported. These devices will lack some layers of security protections so that their users may dig into the deeper, less examined core of the phone. The first phones will be sent out early next year.

The bug bounty programme was first launched for iOS in 2016. Rewards were initially set at up to USD 200,000, and Apple has now increased that to USD 1 million for detecting any method for remote attacks on iOS. The company also added a USD 500,000 tier reward for security shortcomings that allow hackers to access user data and a 50 percent bonus on all rewards for vulnerabilities detected in beta versions of the software.
