Apple inks multi-year content deal with Oprah Winfrey

Apple has announced a multi-year partnership with Oprah Winfrey to create original programming. In a brief statement, Apple said the partners “will create original programmes that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world.” The projects will be released as part of a lineup of original content from Apple, to which the company previously revealed it has committed an initial USD 1 billion.

Winfrey will continue as chairman and CEO of Discovery Communications-backed cable network OWN. Last month Netflix said it reached a multi-year deal to produce films and series with former US president Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Netflix has announced a deal to produce films and series with former US president Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, the Obamas will produce a range of scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features, said Netflix, adding that the couple have set up Higher Ground Productions to produce the content to be aired on the streaming service.

Apple has hired a new creative director for Europe, worldwide video, the BBC reported, saying Jay Hunt is the former controller of BBC One and chief creative officer of Channel Four. Apple has not specified what the duties of Hunt will be, but she is expected to commission programmes on its behalf.

Apple has decided to product original video content with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television and Comcast's Universal Television, the Wall Street Journal reported. The new partners will make new episodes of the 1980s sci-fi and horror series "Amazing Stories." Under the agreement, there will be ten new episodes, with Spielberg as the likely producer, sources said. Each episode will cost over USD 5 million.
