Apple unveils new all-in-one TV app

Apple has launched a new TV app, called simply TV, that is designed to give owners of the Apple TV box a place to access the 1,600 video content providers that have apps on the platform via one browsable location. Key features of the TV app include “Watch Now”,  where viewers can see their collection of available shows and movies from iTunes and apps, “Up Next”, where users can enjoy the shows and movies they are currently watching in the order they are most likely to watch first, “Recommended”, where viewers can explore a great selection of curated and trending shows and movies, as well as a “Library” section and a “Store” tab, to discover new content across video services that they have not yet downloaded or are not yet subscribed to.

In addition to the new TV app, customers in the US will be able to access their pay-TV video apps by using single sign-on. Starting in December, subscribers to Directv, Dish Network and more will just sign in once on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad to enjoy immediate access to apps that are part of their pay-TV subscription.

However, the TV app will not include two of the most popular subscription video streaming services – Netflix or Amazon Video – with a Netflix spokesperson confirming to Wired that the company is not participating at launch, although it is “evaluating the opportunity”.

The TV app and single sign-on will be available in December as free software updates for Apple TV (4th generation), iPhone and iPad customers in the US.
