BA to debut Inmarsat's in-flight connectivity in summer 2017
Inmarsat won an order from International Airlines Group (IAG) to provide seamless 4G and satellite in-flight connectivity across its short-haul fleet.

Inmarsat's European Aviation Network (EAN) will make its debut aboard a British Airways A321, in the summer of 2017.

Up to 341 Airbus A320 family aircraft in IAG's fleets will be fitted with EAN, which combines Inmarsat's new dedicated S-band satellite with a new LTE mobile terrestrial network provided by Deutsche Telekom.

As well as BA, IAG's Vueling, Iberia and Aer Lingus branded operations will also offer inflight Wi-Fi on their narrow-bodied jets, with bandwidth capacity and connection speeds similar to those offered by domestic consumer broadband services.

IAG said that by 2019, 90 percent of its planes will be fitted with high-quality connectivity.

In-flight Wi-Fi is already common in the US. IAG announced in-flight connectivity for long-haul flights earlier this year, and Netherlands-based carrier KLM also said it was equipping its entire long-haul fleet with the technology.

Inmarsat also announced today the commercial launch of Jet ConneX, its in-flight broadband service for business aviation customers.
