Belgacom upgrades systems after hacking attempt
Belgacom announced that it implemented security improvements in its IT systems the weekend of 14-15 September, after finding traces of a hacking attempt with a virus in its computer system. The operator said the latest upgrades are part of a longer strategy to protect customers and their data and ensure continuity of services. Belgacom stressed that the latest upgrades should also prevent future attacks. There is no sign of any impact on customer data from the latest attack, nor were services affected, the company said. It has notified the federal police of the incident and said it will cooperate with their investigation.

BICS, Belgacom's international carrier services arm, also issued a statement saying that its systems were affected by the attack. However, there was no indication that BICS’ network, which carries the actual customer traffic, was impacted by the intrusion on the Belgacom Group corporate IT network. BICS also filed a complaint with the Belgian prosecutor against an unknown third party over the attack.
