BlackBerry targets govt market with Secusmart takeover
BlackBerry is expanding in the secure communications market with the acquisition of Secusmart, a German provider of voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping software for governments, businesses and operators. BlackBerry already offers some of Secusmart's products to customers, and their joint product meets the highest security requirements of the German federal authorities and NATO for restricted communications.

Last year, the SecuSuite for BlackBerry 10 was selected by Germany's Federal Office for Information Security for classified communications for the country's highest public officials. The two companies have provided Secusmart-equipped BlackBerry smartphones to a number of German government agencies and almost all German government ministries and leaders, including Chancellor Angela Merkel.

BlackBerry plans to expand Secusmart's offering to governments and businesses in other parts of the world. Secusmart will remain a German limited liability company. The transaction still needs regulatory approval to be completed. No financial details were disclosed.
