French operator Bouygues Telecom’s revenue decreased by 5 percent to EUR 1.1 billion in the first quarter, with network sales down 9 percent to EUR 1 billion, compared to the first quarter of 2013. EBITDA declined by EUR 49 million to EUR 163 million, mainly due to ongoing repricing with the mobile customer base.
The company had 11.06 million mobile customers at the end of March, 79,000 fewer than three months earlier. However postpaid customers grew by 30,000 to 9.94 million and 4G customers grew by 400,000 to 1.4 million in the quarter. Some 13 percent of Bouygues’ customers are now on 4G, compared to 10 percent at the end of December 2013.
In fixed broadband, Bouygues added 100,000 new customers in the first quarter, compared to 45,000 additions in the first quarter of 2013, driven by the success of its EUR 19.99 a month triple-play service. The operator had 2.211 million fixed broadband customers at the end of March.
Bouygues, which is reportedly being considered for takeover by Orange, confirmed its objective of achieving a slightly positive EBITDA minus capex in 2014. It will continue to develop data use by capitalising on 4G and to launch multiple brakthroughs to accelerate growth in the fixed segment. It aims to save EUR 300 million a year on its total cost base by 2016.
