China Mobile picks Ericsson as 5G RAN and core network vendor

Ericsson has won a 5G contract from China Mobile including 5G radio access network (RAN) and 5G core (5GC) components for the second phase of its nationwide NR standalone rollout. Under the terms of this new deal, China Mobile extends its 5G RAN partnership with Ericsson to 17 provinces.

Ericsson will deploy its Radio System products and services, as well as its 5G core network equipment in two major regions, covering five provinces. The 5G Core network will be deployed on NFVI along with Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration. As part of a previous agreement, Ericsson is also providing Cloud VoLTE, Cloud Unified Data Management (UDM) and Policy.

Ericsson and China Mobile’s extended cooperation on 5G networks is a new milestone in a long partnership that spans nearly 30 years of mobile technology in China. Ericsson become one of key partners of China Mobile in 5G network construction.

Ericsson said it has won just 2 percent of the latest tender for 5G radio network equipment at China Mobile. The contract for the 700 MHz band is much less than the 11 percent share awarded the Swedish supplier in the previous tender for the 2.6 GHz band. China Mobile Shanghai and Huawei have deployed what they call "the world's first 4.9 GHz commercial LampSite network" in Shanghai, China. As part of the project, an aggregate bandwidth of 200 MHz on the 2.6 and 4.9 GHz bands and distributed Massive MIMO have been simultaneously implemented in digital indoor networks. The deployment reached peak rates of more than 3 Gbps, China Mobile said.

Ericsson releases standalone 5G software for mid, low bands

ZTE to provide BRAS & vBRAS routers and switches for China Mobile

ZTE has won 70 percent of China Mobile's 2019-2020 BRAS & vBRAS high-end router & switch (Section 4) centralized procurement by virtue of its vBRAS service. ZTE says its vBRAS will help China Mobile increase equipment resource utilization rate, accelerate new service deployment, as well as provide technical support for China Mobile's network construction in 5GC scenarios.

China Mobile Tianjin (Tianjin Mobile) and Huawei have announced the first commercial use of next generation optical transport network (NG OTN) premium private lines in a network for Tianjin Medical University General Hospital. Tianjin Mobile has built an OTN all-optical network using Huawei's 200G, OXC, and iMaster NCE.

China Telecom, Unicom select Ericsson as 5G RAN vendor

China Telecom and China Unicom have selected Ericsson as a 5G radio access network (RAN) vendor as part of the two operator's joint nationwide 5G network. China Telecom has also selected Ericsson as a 5G Core vendor. Under the terms of the contracts, Ericsson will provide China Telecom and China Unicom with the Ericsson Radio System products, including Ericsson Spectrum Sharing, as the two Chinese operators roll out 5G across the Asian country.

ZTE, China Mobile deploy cloud-based 5G transport management, control system

ZTE in partnership with the Guangdong Branch of China Mobile, completed the large-scale deployment of ZTE's intelligent cloud-based 5G transport management and control system Zenic One (UME) in Guangdong province of China, so as to achieve the unified management of 150,000 PTN network elements. Based on the cloud-native microservice technology, ZTE's Zenic One (UME) system adopts a new-generation B/S management and control system with the functionality to manage up to 300,000+ network elements.

Nokia left out from China Unicom-Telecom 5G contracts

China Unicom and China Telecom announced Huawei and ZTE as suppliers for their joint standalone 5G network deployment, with Nokia being left out, writes the GSMA website Mobileworldlive.com. The contracts are valued at CNY 183.5 billion (USD 25.92 billion). The domestic vendors each won 35.9 percent of the value of the tenders, while Ericsson and Datang Mobile Communications received 17.9 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively, slices of the deal.

China Mobile Q1 customer numbers, revenues, profit fall amid virus pandemic

China said it had 946 million customers at the end of the first quarter, less than the 950 million recorded at the end of December. Of the total, 752 million customers used 4G services, off from 758 million, and 191 used wireline broadband, up from 187 million. 5G package customers lifted to 31.7 million from 2.55 million.

Chinese operators launch 5G-enabled rich communication service

China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have introduced a 5G-enabled messaging service. The three operators published a white paper for the 5G messaging service, which specifies the technical details necessary for smartphone makers to support the new service, China.org reports. The 5G-based rich communication service (RCS) is designed to replace current short messages with a system that provides phone book polling and is designed to transmit in-call multimedia.

ZTE has secured the western network project in China Mobile's phase-13 centralized procurement for inter-provincial backbone transport network equipment. According to ZTE, the western network, covering 19 provinces of China, will be the world's largest commercial optical transport network (OTN), with a total link length reaching 53,828 km.

China Mobile picks Huawei, ZTE to deploy 200,000 5G base stations

Huawei and ZTE won China Mobile's latest tender of 5G contracts. Huawei and ZTE will deploy 200,000 5G base stations, or up to 85 percent of the base stations included in the project, Caixin reports, citing a China Mobile statement. The overall project will see the deployment of 232,143 5G wireless network base stations in 28 provincial-level regions.

5G to account for half of China's mobile connections by 2025 - GSMA

5G will account for almost half of China's mobile connections by 2025. Chinese operators' mobile capex is forecast to top USD 180 billion over the next five years, 90 percent of which will be used for the development of 5G networks, according to a report from the GSMA. The report also shows that China is leading early adoption in 5G and has already deployed more than 160,000 5G base stations covering 50 cities as operators aim to expand standalone 5G network coverage and capacity.
