China Mobile picks Huawei, ZTE to deploy 200,000 5G base stations
Huawei and ZTE won China Mobile’s latest tender of 5G contracts. Huawei and ZTE will deploy 200,000 5G base stations, or up to 85 percent of the base stations included in the project, Caixin reports, citing a China Mobile statement. The overall project will see the deployment of 232,143 5G wireless network base stations in 28 provincial-level regions.

Under the terms of the contracts, Huawei will install 57.2 percent of the base stations, while ZTE will deploy 28.7 percent of the overall base stations included in the project. Another Chinese enterprise, a consortium between two little-known companies, won the 2.6 percent remaining share of the deal. Ericsson won a 11.4 percent share of the contracts.

The contracts were valued at CNY 37 billion (USD 5.2 billion), with China Mobile paying CNY 153,000 on average for each 5G base station.

China plans to build a total of 630,000 5G base stations by year-end. China Mobile will deploy half of this total. China Mobile ended 2019 with 80,000 5G base stations deployed across the country. China Mobile earlier announced plans to invest CNY 180 billion in its 5G infrastructure this year.
