Deutsche Telekom plans EUR 18.4 bln investment in fibre, 5G expansion in 2021

Deutsche Telekom plans to invest EUR 18.4 billion this year in expanding fibre and 5G networks, CEO Timotheus Hoettges said in a press conference to introduce the company's financial results for 2020, Handelsblatt reports. The sum does not include funds deployed for mobile frequencies. The company intends to finance projects in Germany to the tune of over EUR 5.5 billion and by 2024, annual spending in Germany will increase to EUR 6 billion.

Telekom aims to reinforce its position in 5G and fibre-optics above all. From 2024, the company will connect 2.5 million households per year with fibre. By 2030, every household in Germany will have access to the fibre-optic network, said Hoettges, the report added. In broadband business, Telekom benefited for a long time from running the copper telephone network, an infrastructure that is available in almost every household in Germany, said Handelsblatt. Telekom supplied broadband services through DSL. In the meantime, however, Vodafone seems to have overtaken Telekom in terms of speeds offered, with a promise to provide 1 Gbps compared with Telekom's 250 Mbps.

Deutsche Telekom passed EUR 100 billion in revenues for the first time in 2020, thanks to its takeover of US operator Sprint. Revenue increased by 25.4 percent to EUR 101.0 billion and grew 3.0 percent on an organic basis. Adjusted EBITDA after leases was up 41.6 percent, or 7.9 percent higher on an organic basis, to EUR 35 billion, in line with the company's forecast.
