Ethiopia has suspended its tender to license a second new telecoms operator. The Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) said the process started in September was suspended after several prospective bidders requested a delay in the process.
The authority said it agreed with the requests to resume the process "at a convenient time in the future" and said it was grateful for the engagement from bidders. No further details on when the tender may be resumed were provided.
The previous deadline for the request for proposals was 20 December. After licensing a consortium led by Vodafone's Safaricom earlier this year, Ethiopia was hoping to attract a second group to help develop the local telecoms market.
