European telcos join EUR 8 mln 5G mobile transport project

Operators Orange and Telefonica are part of an 18-member consortium tasked with developing a Software Defined Networking/Network Function Virtualisation-based 5G mobile transport and computing platform for verticals. The 30-month 5G-Transformer project received a EUR 7.98 million grant from the European H2020 5G Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) and targets support of multiple vertical tenants with a diverse set of networking and computing requirements, from industries including automotive, healthcare and media.

In a statement, the consortium specified that the networking and computing fabric aggregates and federates multiple domains and infrastructure providers into a single platform where multiple transport slices will be created and managed. The 5G-Transformer project will build on the solutions developed in the H2020 5G-PPP phase-1 projects, such as 5G-Crosshaul and 5GEx.

The 18 partners include international vendors (NEC, Ericsson, Nokia, InterDigital), operators (Orange, Telefonica), vertical industries (CRF – The Research Center of FCA, ATOS, Ayuntamiento de Madrid), SMEs (Nextworks, Mirantis) and research institutes and universities (b<>com, University Carlos III of Madrid, CTTC, Politecnico di Torino, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Eurecom, ITRI (Taiwan)).

Nokia-led consortium to develop 5G platform-as-a-service

Nokia Bell Labs announced that it will be leading a consortium of industry vendors, operators, IT companies, SMEs and academic institutions in an EU-funded project to develop a next-generation Platform-as-a-Service (NGPaaS) for the 5G era. Italian telecommunications network specialist Italtel announced that it will receive EUR 1.15 million in EU funds for its role in three Horizon 2020 research projects. The three R&D programmes – dubbed MATILDA, 5GCITY and 5G ESSENCE – are part of 5G-PPP's Research and Innovation initiative and are expected to run for 30 months.

Ericsson-led consortium launches 5G connected car project

Ericsson announced that it will be leading a consortium of several companies in an EU-funded project to develop an overall 5G system architecture providing end-to-end vehicle-to-everything (V2X) network connectivity. The project involves 14 partners including Orange, Huawei, Nokia, PSA group and Volvo Cars and represents a significant step towards the advent of 5G technology for connected vehicles, said Ericsson, adding that the full details of the 5GCAR initiative will be outlined in full later this month.
