Former Vodafone CEO Colao named tech innovation minister in new Italian govt

Former Vodafone Group chief executive Vittorio Colao has been appointed Italy’s Minister for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition in the cabinet of the country’s new prime minister Mario Draghi. Colao stepped down as Vodafone Group CEO in October 2018 after 10 years at the helm and was last year appointed to head a high-level task force of experts, economists and jurists given powers to map the country’s exit from Covid-19 restrictions.

The former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi was sworn in as Italy’s prime minister at the head of a unity government on 13 February, after Giuseppe Conte stepped down following weeks of political turmoil. In addition to Colao, Draghi has named Daniele Franco, the current director general of the Bank of Italy, as economic minister, while federal deputy secretary of the Lega party Giancarlo Giorgetti has been appointed head of the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE), including the telecommunications and electronic communications briefs.

The new Draghi government is Italy’s third administration in less than three years and will face votes of confidence in both houses of parliament on 15 and 16 February.
