Workers from Google and other Alphabet companies have created the first Alphabet Workers Union, with support from the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the union announced. The union will be open to all Alphabet employees, regardless of role or classification and be part of CWA Local 1400. The new union aims to actively push for changes at the company, from the kinds of contracts Google accepts to employee classification, wage and compensation issues. "All issues relevant to Google as a workplace will be the purview of the union and its members," the CWA said.
On its website, the Alphabet Workers Union said it was open to temporary employees, contractors and vendors, as well as full-time employees.
Bloomberg first reported the news, saying the union was started by a group of 225 employees following years of disagreements between workers and management. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The report said the union will have an elected board of directors and paid organising staff members, with union members paying 1 percent of total compensation, which includes salary and equity.
The union's mission statement
The union said on its website that its aims to protect Alphabet workers and that it wants to ensure working conditions are inclusive and fair, fighting against harassment, bigotry, discrimination, or retaliation. It will also look to ensure Alphabet acts ethically and in the best interests of society and the environment.
