Google hires former Intel exec to head custom chip division

Former Intel executive Uri Frank will join Google and lead its custom chip division as VP of engineering for server chip design, Frank announced on his LinkedIn profile. He said he looked forward to growing a team in Israel while accelerating Google Cloud innovations in compute infrastructure. Google made the announcement also on its blog, saying it had long looked to Israel for novel technologies including Waze, Call Screen, flood forecasting, high-impact features in Search, and Velostrata’s cloud migration tools, and that it now looked forward to growing its presence “in this global innovation hub.”

Frank left Google in late February, with sources saying he had received an interesting offer, Calcalist reported. He had recently received a promotion to corporate VP. He previously served as head of Intel’s Core & Client Development Group, made up of 2,000 employees in Israel, India and the US. There, he worked on a number of projects, including Sandy Bridge and Ice Lake. Frank first came to Intel in 1997.
