Google starts rolling out Android choice of browser, search engine
Google has made some changes to how people can personalise their Android devices. The company said it made the changes in order to comply with the European Commission’s ruling from July 2018. Android device users will now be able to install any app they want and also choose what services to use as defaults in apps like Google Chrome. The new screens will come to Android users in Europe through an update over the next few weeks, for both existing and new Android users.

Google said two new screens will be displayed after the upcoming update, one for browsers and another for search apps. Each screen will contain a total of five apps, based on their popularity, and shown in random order. Should a user want an additional search app or browser, another screen will be showed, on how to set up the new app. Users will then also be asked whether they to change Chrome’s default search engine the next time they open Chrome.

Google received a fine of EUR 4.3 billion in July of last year, with the European Commission saying the company abused its dominant position in the Android apps market. The company was found to have imposed illegal restrictions on Android device manufacturers and mobile network operations. For example, device manufacturers had to pre-install the Google Search app and Chrome browser as a condition for licensing Google’s app store. The company was also accused of halting the development of alternatives to Android, such as Amazon’s attempt at a Fire OS.
