GSMA quick to welcome EC telecoms framework review

Mobile industry group the GSMA has issued a statement welcoming the European Commission’s launch of a public consultation on telecoms regulatory reform. The EC said the consultation was called to explore the extent to which European telecoms rules need to be modernised to address changing technology and market conditions. The GSMA was quick to reply that modernisation of regulation in the sector was urgently needed to respond to the changed realities in the market. “The European telecoms market has changed radically since the current set of telecommunications regulations was adopted. The European market needs a new regulatory framework that enhances the region’s ability to be a hub for investment and innovation, as well as protecting European citizens as consumers of communications services,” it said, adding that the new framework should be focused above all on removing unnecessary regulatory burdens.

The GSMA also said the telecoms framework review provided a fresh opportunity to look at reforms to spectrum policy, supporting deployment of new and harmonised spectrum for mobile broadband across Europe.
