WarnerMedia announced that its streaming platform HBO Max will begin its European rollout in the Nordics and Spain on 26 October before expanding to 14 more territories next year. In a statement that confirms earlier reports, the company said Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Spain and Andorra are the first six European countries to receive the service, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia in 2022.
The full content and price details for Europe will be unveiled at a virtual launch event in October but the offering is set to include movies and series from Warner Bros, HBO, DC and Cartoon Network plus a large number of local productions under the new Max Originals brand alongside acquisitions from third parties.
HBO Max will be available to new customers as well as existing customers of HBO Spain, HBO Nordic and HBO Go, and will be billed either directly or via eligible partners. In the UK, Germany, Italy and France, HBO currently licences its content to local operators such as Sky but the company revealed that “additional territory launches” are also planned for next year.
The streaming platform debuted in 39 territories across Latin America and the Caribbean last June, a year after its US launch. In July, AT&T said it expects HBO and HBO Max to have between 70 million and 73 million global customers by the end of the year.
