Honor launches flagship Magic3 range featuring Snapdragon 888+ chip

Honor announced the launch of its new Magic3 series of smartphones, with top models featuring the new, premium Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G processor. The company emphasized the photography capabilities of the three devices, its first flagship range since becoming a standalone group in the wake of the US technology ban on former parent company Huawei.

Sales will commence in mainland China and launches for other global markets will be announced later, with prices ranging from EUR 899 for the base Magic3 model, EUR 1,099 for the Magic3 Pro and EUR 1,499 for the top-flight Honor Magic3 Pro+.

The top model features a quad camera set-up, with 50 MP wide main camera plus monochrome, ultra-wide and periscope telephoto modules all with 64 MP sensors. It also has a large 1/1.28-inch sensor while the standard and Pro versions feature a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 1/1.56-inch sensor.

The Pro+ model has a ceramic body, available in black or white and both it and the Pro version feature IP68 dust and water protection. All three models have curved, 6.76 inch screens capable of displaying HDR10+ content. The two lower models are available in a range of colours and with a synthetic leather finish.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus powers the Magic3 Pro+ and Pro versions while the lowest-spec model has the standard 888 chip. Honor claims that its in-house optimisations to the chipset allow the phones to combine bandwidth from Wi-Fi and cellular networks to achieve the fastest download speed available on a phone at 6.1Gbps.

The Magic3 line feature 4600 mAh batteries with 66W charging while the Pro+ and Pro models can charge wirelessly at 50W and are capable of acting as power banks to charge other devices.

Honor was in sixth place for 5G Android smartphone shipments in the second quarter, shipping 3.6 million for a 3.8 percent market share, ahead of former owner Huawei.
