HTC narrows Q4 loss on sharp fall in costs, lower sales

HTC said revenues for its fourth quarter reached TWS 22.2 billion, flat from the previous quarter and down from TWD 25.7 billion a year earlier. The smartphone maker recorded a gross margin of 10.5 percent, down from 16.1 percent in Q3.

The operating loss widened to TWD 3.6 billion from a loss of 2.0 billion in Q3, but was down slightly from TWD 4.1 billion in Q4 2015. The net loss of TWD 3.1 billion or TWD 3.77 per share widened versus TWD 1.8 billion in Q3 but was down from TWD 3.4 billion a year earlier.

HTC said sales in the quarter were robust, with costs reduced by 34 percent.

CEO Cher Wang said she was pleased with the company’s overall performance over the past year and that the HTC had enhanced efficiencies across all key processes. Wang added that the company has learned much from its entrance into the world of virtual reality, and that it believes its focused approach to building the ecosystem is the right strategy, with its HTC Vive is at the forefront of that market.
