HTC profit drops 91 percent in Q4
Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC reported a net profit down 91 percent to TWD 1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to the year-earlier period. The company's revenue shrank to TWD 60 billion from TWD 101.42 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011. Its operating income was TWD 600 million. In an effort to adjust to fierce competition HTC said it would focus on better marketing and the development of more innovative smartphones, led by a new version of the Butterfly phone it launched at the end of last year.

HTC reported preliminary results for the first quarter showing revenues at TWD 42.8 billion, down 36.9 percent from a year earlier. The company earlier forecast sales flat to lower versus Q4, at TWD 50-60 billion. The year-on-year drop in sales accelerated from 6.5 percent in January to 48.6 percent in March. HTC expects little improvement in its results in the first quarter. In a presentation of its fourth-quarter results, the smartphone maker forecast revenue flat to lower on a quarterly basis in the first three months of 2013, at TWD 50-60 billion. The gross margin is estimated at 21-23 percent, versus 23 percent in Q4, and the operating margin is expected to drop to 0.5-1.0 percent, from 1.0 percent in the previous quarter.

HTC reported an improvement in sales in November, helped by the recent launch of its new Windows smartphones. The company's revenues rose 23.3 percent from the previous month to TWD 21.23 billion. Sales were still down 31.4 percent from November 2011, but the annual decline slowed from over 50 percent in the two preceding months. HTC earlier forecast fourth-quarter revenue of around TWD 60 billion, versus a reported TWD 70.2 billion for Q3. Sales in October and November totaled TWD 38.4 billion.

HTC Q3 profit sinks 79% as revenues fall to TWD 70 bln

HTC reported a record profit decline in the third quarter amid competition from Samsung and Apple, Bloomberg reported. The company had warned in August that profits would continue falling. Revenue in Q3 slid 48 percent to TWD 70.2 billion, at the lower end of the company's forecast of TWD 70-80 billion. The net profit sank to TWD 3.9 billion, down 79 percent from the year before.

HTC is expanding its operations in China in an attempt to take a bigger share of the growing smartphone market there.
