Huawei renews top model with launch of P10 smartphone

Huawei introduced at Mobile World Congress its latest top-of-the-line models, the P10 and P10 Plus smartphones. The new phones come less than a year after the P9, as Huawei seeks to continue growing its market share in the premium segment. The P10 will launch in March in around 30 countries to start for a recommended price of EUR 649, and the Plus will sell for EUR 699 or EUR 799 depending on the configuration.

Running Huawei's newest processor, the Kirin 960, which earlier launched on the Huawei Mate 9, the P10 features a 5.1-inch screen and the Plus version comes with a 5.5-inch display. The Plus offers higher resolution, at 1,440 x 2,560p compared to 1080p for the standard P10. Both come with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and narrow bezel edges.

The Plus also offers greater memory and storage, at 4 GB and 128 GB in its high-spec version, compared to respectively 4 GB and 64 GB for the P10. Both come with microSD card slots and the dual-lens camera Huawei developed with Leica. The camera is an updated of the model launched last year on the P9, with 20-megapixel RGB and 12-megapixel monochrome lenses on the back and an 8-megapixel version on the front. The P10 Plus features the 'Pro Edition', with a larger aperture of f/1.8. The P10 models also feature Highlights, a mobile editing tool which creates a dynamic video of images and was co-developed with GoPro.

An added feature on the P10 Plus is support for LTE Cat 12 and download speeds up to 600 Mbps - a world first according to Huawei. In addition to 4x4 MIMO on the P10 Plus, both devices feature 2X2 Wi-Fi MIMO for better Wi-Fi speed and coverage.

The new phones come with a USB type-C port and SuperCharge, offering a full charge for the 3,200 mAh battery on the P10 in 90 minutes and 100 minutes to charge the 3,750 mAh battery on the Plus. Both run Android 7.0 and Huawei's EMUI 5.1. Huawei also moved the fingerprint sensor to the front of the phone, replacing the navigation bar under a smooth glass surface.

The P10 models will be available in a range of finishes and colours, following a recent partnership between Huawei and the Pantone institute. The 'Hyper Diamond-Cut' finish will be available in Dazzling Blue and Dazzling Gold, the sandblast finish is offered in the colours Greenery, Rose Gold, Mystic Silver, Graphite Black and Prestige Gold, and a high-gloss version is available in Ceramic White.
